A Berlin Brunch

Updated: Apr 13, 2019

I was planning on doing a comprehensive food blogpost for Berlin, Amsterdam, and Budapest, but after today I cannot contain myself nor can I be complacent with putting such culinary excellence as was experienced at Kuddelmuddel alongside the rest of the restaurants we have dined at.

10:40am: Nadia & I arrive at Kuddelmuddel still half-asleep, but too hungry to wait any longer for breakfast. The tables were stacked atop one another. The door was cracked open. Still staring at the empty interior, i announce “I think it’s still closed.” I turn on my cellular data (this was a matter that deserved data) and the website confirmed that the restaurant would not open its doors to us for 20 more minutes. Tension was high. We were two hungry, sleepy vegans with nowhere to eat and nothing to do for 20 minutes. We walked and walked and saw some cute pups and walked until 21 minutes lapsed and Kuddelmuddel was ready to welcome us.

The space itself is charming— pastel blues and greens, antique store tables and chairs, flowers and raw sugar on the tables, and twinkly lights adorning the front of the bar. Their music taste was also so wonderful! Any restaurant that plays Sharon Van Etten gets an A+ for ambience.

Going to vegan restaurants is always a stressful experience for me because of my tree nut allergy. It seems that if a vegan restaurant can use almonds and cashews in their dish, they will. However, I went up to order — asking multiple time about nuts and not only did he permit substitutions of oat milk instead of almond milk, but he was also so reassuring and kind about me asking so many questions.

Dark Chocolate Smoothie with Coconut Cream :')

Nadia and I ended up getting the dark chocolate smoothie, the chickpea omelette, and the peanut butter and jelly French toast. All vegan. The smoothie was the thickest smoothie I’ve ever had. It was more like a huge glass of dark chocolate pudding topped with coconut whipped cream. The PB&J french toast was as tasty as it sounds. The star, however, was the chickpea omelette. It was better than any egg omelette I’ve ever eaten (and I loved eggs before going vegan). It was so eggy and flavorful with just the right ratio of spinach and cheese. It was also on top of the most delicious piece buttered bread. Even Nadia, who hates eggs. Loved it. We decided that we would have to come back again before leaving. We came back on Saturday before our flight back to Copenhagen. Once again, we waited outside, counting down the minutes until it opened. We got a berry cacao smoothie, which was just as delicious at the chocolate smoothie, avocado toast, and of course, the chickpea omelette.

What makes Kuddelmuddel so fantastic is that they have simple dishes, but they use extremely fresh ingredients. I have had many avocado toasts but never quite like their's — the olive oil, the arugula, the bread, the avocado— all of it is was just better than anything else I've ever tried.
